Local risks in Chhapra

Highway crashes on NH-722

On the night of 27 October 2026 a truck hit a tempo near Bhainsmara in Garkha, on the Chhapra to Muzaffarpur road. Four of the six people aboard died, including a family returning home from a wedding by train, and we cover it in a case study.

Gandak, Ganga and Ghaghra floods

On 2 October 2026 the swollen Gandak broke embankments and flooded new areas of Saran, and 12 NDRF and 7 SDRF teams were sent in. The district disaster page says the 2020 floods reached 615 villages in 10 blocks.

Spurious liquor

In December 2022 a spurious liquor tragedy in the Chhapra area killed dozens, with early reports of 39 deaths and later ones higher. Illicit liquor can contain poison, so never drink it and take anyone with vomiting, blurred vision or collapse to a hospital at once.

Earthquake zone IV

The district disaster page puts Saran in seismic zone IV and names the 1934 earthquake as the worst on record, with later ones in 1988 and 2015. Older brick and unreinforced buildings in tight lanes are the main worry.

Village fires with thin cover

The district page says fires are mostly local but hit villages hard, and no fire station list could be found for the district. Keep water and sand at home, store fuel and straw away from the kitchen, and give a clear landmark when you ring 112.
