Local risks in Pandaveswar

Winding failure at a colliery

On the evening of 26 October 2026 a rope slipped off the winding drum at Kumardihi A Colliery, leaving 12 to 14 miners stuck in two cages about 50 metres down for nearly 12 hours. All were brought up safely with no casualty, and we cover it in a case study.

Machinery stoppages underground

In May 2015 a boiler fault at the Pandabeshwar coal mine trapped 45 night-shift miners for about five hours before they were brought out. Lifts, winding gear and boilers are the equipment that, when they stop, leave people underground.

Subsidence and illegal mining

In October 2023 land subsidence at an open-cast mine at Raniganj, in the same coalfield, left at least three people dead and four reported missing. A local leader tied it to illegal mining by people who go into mines without safety gear.

River and barrage floods

The Pandabeswar block lies between the Ajay on the north and the Damodar on the south. In October 2020 a lock gate of the Durgapur barrage on the Damodar was badly damaged, and villagers in low-lying West Burdwan feared flooding.
