Local risks in Kakinada

Cyclone Arnab came ashore on this coast

Cyclone Arnab made landfall near Yanam and Kakinada from late 27 October into 28 October 2026, as we cover in a case study; these facts are as of 28 October and the toll is still settling. A few hundred trees and fewer than 100 electric poles came down in the district, the coastal Uppada road was washed away, and police pulled people out of floodwater near Bombay Katta.

Storm surge and sea water on low ground

For Arnab the forecast was a surge of 1 to 1.5 m above normal tide, likely to flood low-lying areas, and the Anchorage Port godowns were reported flooded by rain and seawater with power lost. When Cyclone Montha came ashore near Kakinada on 28 October 2025, an 8 km beach road between Kakinada and Uppada was damaged.

An old cyclone coast

The district's own disaster page calls Kakinada a regular victim of multiple disasters, such as a cyclone followed by floods, and adds that cutting mangroves worsens coastal erosion. The 1839 Coringa cyclone destroyed the old Coringa port with a surge estimated at 40 feet, which shows what this shore can face.

A cracker unit blast in the fields

On 28 February 2026 an explosion at the Surya Sri firework unit in Vetlapalem village, Samarlakota mandal, killed about 20 workers. The village had poor road connectivity, which delayed the fire tenders, so units on field tracks can wait a long time for help.
