Local risks in Tiruchirappalli

Highway crashes on the Madurai road

Early on 26 October 2026 a private omni bus with 46 passengers ran into the back of a lorry at Valasupatti near Manapparai. The bus cleaner died and more than 40 passengers were hurt, and local people broke windows to pull them out; we cover it in a case study.

Out-of-control buses in the city

On 9 August 2025 a minibus went out of control in Tiruchi, killing three people and injuring ten. Buses at speed are a repeat risk on the city roads and the highways that meet here.

Cauvery and Kollidam floods

The district disaster plan lists flood and cyclone damage in 1998, 1999 and 2005, and says the Cauvery and Coleroon spill over large areas in the north-east monsoon. It rates about 373 sq km as very high flood risk and about 975 sq km as high risk.

Explosives and heavy industry

In December 2016 an explosion and fire at an explosives factory near Tiruchi was reported with a toll of 10, as floors collapsed on workers. The district also has heavy engineering and defence units, and its plan runs mock drills at an LPG yard.

Temple festival crowds

On 21 April 2019 a rush for coins at a temple festival near Thuraiyur killed seven people and injured 12, after a rumour that the coins would run out. The district plan names festival stampedes among its man-made hazards.
