Local risks in Udaipur

Fire engine and trailer crash on NH-48, November 2026

At about 11 am on 1 November 2026 a collision involving two trailers and a fire engine near Makdajpa village, in the Rishabhdev area, set the fire engine's cabin on fire. Two people died in the cabin, two were seriously hurt, traffic backed up for about a kilometre, and we cover it in a case study.

Known danger zones on the highway

A 2017 count listed 53 danger zones in Udaipur district, 28 of them on national highways, with 16 deaths in two years at the first turn in Rishabhdev and 35 at four spots in Kherwara. In April 2026 the Centre approved a Rs 363.89 crore elevated corridor at Kherwara to separate local and through traffic.

Lake gates and the Ayad river

On 28 October 2025, after continuous rain and a heavy fall in the catchment, three Fateh Sagar gates were opened by 2 inches each and the Udai Sagar gates were raised to 3 feet. The water runs down the Ayad river, so low ground along it needs watching in heavy rain.

Large building fires in the city

On the afternoon of 23 January 2026 a large fire damaged a gaming zone in Sukher, and extra fire vehicles had to come from nearby areas. No loss of life was reported.
