Local risks in Ujjain

Mahakal temple fire, Holi 2024

On the morning of 25 March 2024, during the Holi aarti in the Mahakaleshwar sanctum, a fire injured at least 14 priests and temple staff, and nine were reported critical and sent to Indore. Police suspected coloured powder falling on the lamp, and a magisterial inquiry followed.

Simhastha 2028 and daily temple crowds

Plans for the 2028 Simhastha include darshan arrangements for about one lakh devotees a day at Mahakal and about 60,000 police. A police audit has already marked crowd-sensitive areas, parking, railway stops and bus stands.

Kshipra flood, September 2023

On 16 September 2023, over 5 inches of overnight rain and inflow from Indore and Dewas lifted the Kshipra until every temple at Ramghat was under water and the river stood about 1.5 feet below the large bridge. Low-lying areas were evacuated, SDRF and Home Guard teams were put at the ghat, and schools up to Class 12 were closed.

Hotel waste chamber deaths, October 2026

On the night of 31 October 2026 four workers died after going into a food-waste chamber behind a hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas Road, two to clean it and two to rescue them. The Superintendent of Police said none wore protective gear and suffocation is suspected; we cover it in a case study.

Thin fire cover on paper

In November 2025 a state plan for 36 new fire stations named Ujjain among eight municipal corporations due to get one, with cabinet approval still pending then. We found no official list of the city's existing stations.
