Local risks in Gandhidham

Kandla SEZ garment units fire, October 2026

On 29 October 2026, a fire broke out at two garment or textile units inside the Kandla Special Economic Zone at about 11 am, and five fire teams were reported still fighting it four hours later. No casualties were reported, and the cause and loss were not established. We cover it in a case study.

Earthquake zone V and the 2001 Bhuj earthquake

Kutch lies in Seismic Zone V, the highest risk zone. The earthquake of 26 January 2001 struck at 8:46 am, and many recently built multistorey buildings collapsed in Gandhidham and Bhuj. Old and badly built buildings, and tall ones with weak columns, are the main danger.

Cyclones and the port

Before Cyclone Biparjoy in June 2023, shipping at Deendayal Port at Kandla stopped, about 3,000 fishermen and port workers were shifted at Kandla and around 23,000 people in villages within 10 km of the coast were to be moved. Port workers and people near the creek and coast should leave when told, not when the rain starts.

Port and industrial fires

Kandla has separate fire stations for the port and for two industrial plants, and the district holds off-site mock drills for industrial units. In sheds full of cloth, packing and stock, a fire spreads fast, so exits, alarms and a clear way in for the fire teams matter.
