Local risks in Ongole

Cyclone Murasu, November 2026

Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu crossed the coast near Kothapatnam, about 20 km from Ongole, in the early hours of 3 November 2026. Thatched houses collapsed at Samatha Nagar and a tree brought down the statue at the Collectorate, and before landfall 26 coastal villages and 72 habitations were marked highly vulnerable with 70 relief centres set up. We cover it in a case study.

Cyclone Montha, 2025

Cyclone Montha hit farming, fisheries, roads, power lines and Ongole city, and the Collector put the district's crop loss at 12,570 hectares when a central team visited on 10 November 2025. Cotton was the worst hit, with 8,313 hectares damaged.

Cyclone Michaung, December 2023

On 4 December 2023, a day before landfall, continuous drizzle almost stopped normal life in Ongole and the coastal mandals. Officials identified 47 relief centres for about 18,000 people in Kothapatnam, Singarayakonda, Tangutur, Ongole and Naguluppalapadu mandals.

Fallen live wires after a storm

Reports said at least five people died after touching fallen live wires following Cyclone Arnab a week before Murasu, and the Chief Minister asked people to stay indoors until obstructions were cleared. After a cyclone, the wire in the water is the next danger.
