Local risks in Kangpokpi

Shutdown, protests and NH-2 blockade, November 2026

A district shutdown called by a civil body, protests and a blockade of NH-2 followed the recovery of two bodies near the Kangpokpi-Senapati border on 1 November 2026. The shutdown was extended by 48 hours on 2 November, with schools, medical services and the media exempt. We cover it in a case study. We found no official road advisory, so ask the police or your transport operator before you travel.

Stranded vehicles on NH-2, May 2026

In May 2026 a Kangpokpi district shutdown left more than 300 vehicles, mostly goods trucks and passenger buses, stranded on the Kangpokpi and Senapati stretches of NH-2 by its fifth day. A long wait on a hill highway means water, food, fuel and medicines run short.

Heavy rain and landslides in the hills

In August 2024, after two days of rain, mudslides and landslides were reported at several places in the hill districts of Kangpokpi, Tamenglong and Noney. On 30 May 2025 the district administration put out a weather advisory under a yellow alert, warned of landslides in hilly areas and asked people in temporary structures to avoid low-lying ground.

Thin fire cover across the state

Manipur Fire Service lists one sub-station at Kangpokpi, set up in 1990. Its 2025-26 annual report shows 286 staff against 534 sanctioned posts across the state, and 397 fire calls attended in the year. Call 101 or 112 at once and get everyone out first.
