Local risks in Latur

Parcel explosion at a courier office, October 2026

At about 10 am on 31 October 2026 a parcel holding an airgun pistol and CO2 gas cartridges exploded while workers unloaded a courier pickup outside a courier office on Vilasrao Deshmukh Road. Two workers were hurt, one seriously, and police booked four people. The cause awaits the forensic report. We cover it in a case study.

Cloudburst-type rain, May 2025

On 27 May 2025, before the monsoon, floods and flash floods hit Latur city after 264.5 mm of rain fell in a day, and one report said the daily weather warnings had not forecast such rain. In a district known for drought, a dry-looking sky is no reason to ignore a flooded road.

Floods, August and September 2025

On 29 August 2025, 29 of the district's 60 revenue circles recorded excessive rain, about 49 roads were closed and schools were shut. A later report counted three deaths in Latur from 20 September.

Drought and water shortage

Latur is one of Maharashtra's driest districts. In April 2016 water had to be brought in by special trains from Miraj. Store drinking water safely and use it carefully in a dry year.

The 1993 Killari earthquake

On 30 September 1993 an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck at about 4 am, and 817 of the 936 villages in Latur district were damaged. Poor construction and rain beforehand made the destruction worse, so the old stone and mud house is still the weak point.

Summer heat

April and May are the hottest months, and the district has a heat wave action plan. Stay out of the midday sun, drink water often and never leave a person, an animal or a loaded vehicle of parcels in the sun.
